Whooping cranes visit the Saskatoon area annually during their
fall migration. The birds usually start arriving around September 20 and can be seen until about October 26, though some might appear slightly earlier or later. The Saskatoon region is considered one of the best places in the world to view large flocks of whooping cranes from the road because they use a narrow migration corridor that passes just north of the city. They often feed in fields near shallow wetlands and stay for one to five weeks to "fatten up" on waste grain. Folks from all over the world visit Saskatchewan to observe this beautiful bird, and this will give you front row to their splendour. To learn more about Whooping Cranes, read this CBC article.
Sandhill cranes also migrate through Saskatoon during September and October. They are often seen foraging in grain fields during the day and roosting along the South Saskatchewan River at night.
They are on their way south to wintering grounds in the United States. To learn more about Sandhill Cranes, visit Wild about Saskatchewan Website.
